Castlewood School District School $6 Million Bond Referendum Vote
Informational Brochure
The May 2022 tornado caused significant damage to the school. District officials have spent the past year determining how best to rebuild the school. The tornado completely destroyed the stage, gym, cafeteria, kitchen, numerous elementary classrooms, and locker rooms. Additionally, many of the building systems and other parts of the school experienced significant damage.
This past March, the District put forth two referenda questions to expand and enhance the potential repairs. Castlewood voters rejected that proposal. Voters stated that while they supported the additional projects, they wanted a settlement from the District’s insurance company before they would consider supporting additional funding through a bond.
In August, the District reached a settlement with the insurance company. EMC, the District’s insurance company, will pay $5.6 million for the repair and replacement of the gymnasium, stage, classrooms, library, locker rooms, weight room, kitchen, and cafeteria. In addition, they have paid over $2 million for a new roof.
As outlined in the insurance policy, the settlement is for like-for-like repairs to the school. Given the age of the school and the changing educational needs of students, District leadership felt that since the building would be under construction, now is the time to consider needed facility updates that would better serve students and the community.
On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, Castlewood School District voters will be asked to consider a $6 million bond referendum to fund the following projects:
